The new Stylus SX400 is the cost effective solution to the home or small office user’s printing, scanning and photo coping needs. In terms of usage, the SX400 is designed predominantly for printing text and graphics plus photos and this is shown by the great print quality it produces on all these types of documents. One slightly less impressive feature of the SX400 is the print speed which is below average and lets the device down not just standard printing but copying as well. Epson claim the SX400 is capable of 34ppm (pages per minute) but this is a unrealistic figure as it is based on the SX400 printing in draft quality setting and increasing the quality setting to a standard setting decreases the print speed considerably. The scanner and copier functions are average and while they have nothing to complain about and functions at a standard to be excepted for a device at this price range they also have nothing to really write home about apart form the fact that the copier work without the need for a PC to be present which is a convenient feature. Running costs for the device in terms of the cost of the printer ink cartridges are reasonable with a set of Epson SX400 ink cartridges costing £30. The bets value however is to be found with compatible Epson ink cartridges which cost £15 a set.
